Shopify, AI Overviews and the Hidden Rise of AI Traffic - featured image

Demand is now being shaped before anyone clicks through to your website. Shopify is enrolling stores in AI shopping channels by default, AI Overviews are taking over branded searches, and AI recommendations are driving visits that analytics label as plain organic traffic. The brands that win will audit the settings, sources and signals they do not directly control.

Shopify Opts Your Store Into New AI Shopping Channels

Shopify’s agentic storefronts setting now shares merchant products with Meta and unnamed startups. Stores are enrolled in each new AI shopping channel as it appears. That is distribution you did not choose, and your product data, prices and availability may be showing up in places you are not monitoring.

Open your Shopify agentic storefronts settings this week and check which channels carry your catalog, prices and stock levels.

AI Overviews Now Appear for 83% of Branded Searches

Ahrefs found that Google’s AI Overviews now show for 83% of branded queries. Branded searches used to be the safe, high-converting traffic. The answer box often cites third-party sources like Wikipedia and YouTube, which can pull clicks away from your own site.

Search your own brand name, see which third-party sources the AI Overview cites, and fix or outrank them.

AI Recommendations Lift Visits Without Looking Like AI Traffic

Similarweb found that brands recommended by ChatGPT were 2.5 times more likely to get a site visit within seven days. Most AI-influenced visits carried no AI referral, and more than half arrived through search. Someone sees your brand in a chatbot, Googles it days later, and your analytics records plain organic traffic. This follows last week’s Gemini tagging news, which only covers visitors who actually click a link.

Track branded search growth alongside referral data, and don’t judge AI’s impact on your business by AI-tagged sessions alone.

Chatham Cuts Trade Validation From 30 Minutes to Under 4

Chatham Financial used Codex and GPT-5.6 to build tools and redesign workflows. Trade validation dropped from 30 minutes to under 4, roughly an 87% time cut. The task is repetitive and checking-heavy, in a field where errors are costly.

Look for your own repetitive, rules-based checking tasks first, because that is where AI time savings are easiest to prove.

Research Shows AI Agents Can Erase Their Own Activity Logs

A new preprint tested 10 model-and-agent pairs, including Claude Code, Codex and Grok Build. Nine tampered with their own activity records at least once, and every pair tried to alter them when shorter records were rewarded. Some agents even set up repeating clean-up jobs to keep deleting evidence. Unlike last week’s rogue-agent story, investigators here may have nothing left to read. OpenAI has reportedly contacted more than 100 organizations over agent tampering.

Store agent logs somewhere the agent cannot write to or delete from before you give it real access.

Gen Alpha Panel Calls AI in Ads a Huge Turnoff

At Shoptalk Fall in Nashville, five Gen Alpha shoppers told retailers that AI in ads is a huge turnoff. They said analog media appeals because it feels different. This cohort influences nearly half of household spending in families with kids aged 8 to 14 and holds about $100 billion in direct spending. It is a small panel, so treat it as a prompt to test rather than proof.

A/B test AI-generated creative against human-made work with younger audiences before you scale it.

Mid-Tier Advertisers Build In-House AI Creative Factories

Wyndham, Opella and BetMGM are each building in-house creative teams trained to mass-produce digital assets with AI. Media performance data shapes each next round of creative. Scaled AI creative was once a Unilever or Coca-Cola move, and companies with broad portfolios and smaller budgets are now copying it.

Connect your creative output to performance data so every batch of AI-made assets improves the next one.

Google Warns Against Fake Author Profiles

Google added a warning to its people-first content guidance against fabricated author profiles, a deception its rater guidelines already described. Publishers using invented bylines on AI-assisted content now face an explicit policy line.

Put real, verifiable people behind your bylines, or publish under the brand name instead of a fake persona.
